Tom Boleska

Tom was born on 30 July 1986 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and played for the Canadian Junior national team in 2004 as a high school senior. He then attended High Point University, where in his sophomore season he was an All Big South Conference selection and also named to the All Canadian college team. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 35th round of the 2007 MLB entry draft. He signed his first professional contract on 30 July 2007 while playing for the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod summer baseball league. Tom played this past season for the Lynchburg Hillcats of the High A Carolina league.
Brook Coatsworth

Brook Coatsworth was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, and is living in Haarlem, Netherlands, during his current season playing for Olympia Haarlem Baseball Club. Brook will be joining the Great Britain National Team for the first time in an international tournament after being part of the programme since 2007. Brook attended Bacone College in Oklahoma (2001-03) on a baseball scholarship after playing for the Ontario Blue Jays throughout his high school days. He recently played a season in the Western Australian Baseball League for the Perth Baseball Club, and was also selected for the WA Team USA All-star team that played in an exhibition series against the WA Perth Heat and the Chinese-Tapei National Team. Brook is an only child and his parents, Anne and Cubby, are happily living in Toronto.
Brian Essery

Brian Essery is from St Catharines, Ontario, Canada, where he currently plays for the St Catharines Metros Baseball Club, along with GB team-mate Tim Collins. He played college baseball in the United States, followed by three years of professional baseball in the US. In 2008 Brian and his family spent the summer in London, where Brian was player/coach for the London Mets, leading them to a 21-1 regular season and the British National Championship title. Brian is a police officer, working for the Niagara Regional Police out of Niagara Falls, and is married to Stacey, with three children, Julia, Bryson and Ashley.
Aeden McQueary

Aeden McQueary was born in High Wycombe, England, and moved to Orlando, Florida, at the age of seven. He joined the GB team in 2005 while spending the summer playing with the Richmond Flames and working with the MLB Roadshow. In June 2007, while participating in a GB team workout in New York, Aeden was contacted by the San Diego Padres Organization with the invitation to sign a professional contract to catch for their minor league system. This year he has played for ADO in the Dutch League.
Craig Pycock

Craig Pycock is from the Central Coast, New South Wales, Australia. He started playing T-ball when he was six years old, and moved into baseball a few years later. As a youth, he played all his baseball on the Central Coast and as a senior played in the Sydney Major League. He represented Central Coast from U10s through to seniors, NSW County from U14s to seniors and Australia Provincial in 2001 on their European Tour. While playing for the Saarlouis Hornets in the German Bundesliga, Craig was recommended by his then GB team-mate Adam Roberts and joined the GB programmein 2008. He currently lives in Germany and plays for Mannheim Tornados, along with GB team-mate Chris Falls. Craig is single, enjoys anything to do with sport and likes to spend his free time relaxing with friends.
Alex Smith

Alex Smith won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles in 2002 and 2003 and holds the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball single-season ERA record, with a 1.00 in 2002. He has played professionally in Sweden, Perth, Australia, and for Ado den Haag in the Dutch Hoofdklasse, where he finished the 2005 season with a 2.42 ERA. In the summer of 2006 he pitched for the Sussex Skyhawks of the Canadian-American Baseball League and was one of GB’s key pitchers at the European Championships in 2007. Alex now works for Suntrek Industries, a solar power company, and lives in Hermosa Beach, California. As a single man, he enjoys his work tremendously and his life at the beach. In his free time he is training for the World Cup and playing golf, as well as working on a novel and an album of rock-reggae-funk music.
Stephen Spragg

Stephen Spragg is from Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada, but now lives in the US in Augusta, Georgia. He played four years of college baseball at Augusta State University, Liberty University and Kansas City Kansas Community College. He played three years of independent baseball for the Washington Wild Things (2005 and 2006, Frontier League), and for the Chillicothe Paints (2008, Frontier League). He also went to spring training with the San Diego Padres (2006), and played for Mr Cocker HCAW in 2007 and the Euro Stars in 2009, both in the Netherlands. Stephen was invited to join the GB programme by head coach Stephan Rapaglia in late 2006, and played for GB in the 2007 European Championships. A Christian, Stephen is married to Charity and they have a 3-year-old daughter named Hannah, and a 4-month-old son named Luke.
Gary Tongue

Gary Tongue was born in Reading, England. His family moved to Canda when he was five years old. He grew up on the west coast of Canada, primarily in Victoria, British Columbia. He pitched for the University of British Columbia during his college career. In 2002, he spent a brief time in Brisbane, Australia, before returning to North America to tour with GB in California in 2003. He pitched in the Canadian Baseball League prior to the 2003 European Championships in Holland. He then played for ADO-Den Haag in the Dutch League and represented GB in the European Championships in the Czech Republic in 2005. He has enjoyed three successful years playing in Croatia, recently transfering to the Dortmund Wanderers in the Bundesliga. The highlight of his baseball career in Europe was the great run that GB made for the silver medal in Barcelona in the 2007 EC. He is looking forward to helping GB earn international respect in the World Cup.
Paul Waterman

Paul Waterman is from Texada Island, British Columbia, Canada. He is currently playing for the Gauting Indians in the German Bundesliga. Last season he played for the Mannheim Tornados in Germany before heading to Australia to play for the winter. He played high school baseball for the Parksville Royals and college ball at Capilano College and Mayville State University. Paul heard about GB baseball through a friend who played for the GB women’s softball team and first joined the GB programme for the 2007 European Championships. Paul is single and his hobbies include working out, yoga, fishing and reading.
Sam Whitehead

Sam Whitehead is from San Diego, California, US, and has been playing baseball since he was five years old. He was a three-year starter for a Division III baseball programme in Pomona-Pitzer, played one season in London and is now in his fourth year in the German Bundesliga, playing for the Heidenheim Heidekoepfe. He played college baseball with Alex Smith and Mike Renery, also GB players, and at their suggestion tried out for the GB programme in 2005 and made the roster. He has a girlfriend, Sandra. He likes to sketch, go to the beach when he is home and hang out with his friends. Sam has his own surf/skate clothing company, Blakstar, based out of San Diego.

Chris Berset

Chris Berset was born in Natick, Massachusetts, but considers Vienna, Virginia, his hometown. He grew up playing baseball and earned seven varsity letters at The Heights School in Potomac, MD, with four in baseball and three in basketball. He was Rookie of the Year on his varsity baseball team as a freshman and won three MVP honours three times. Chris enrolled in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts at the University of Michigan, where he earned a BS Psychology. He chose Michigan for its strong academic programme and the fact that it had an extremely good baseball team and coaching staff. In fact, Chris considers his greatest sports moment to date as “signing with Michigan”. His favourite baseball team is the Washington Nationals and player is Brian Schneider. Outside baseball Chris enjoys playing basketball and eating pasta and chicken with his family.
Will Lintern

Will Lintern currently lives in Birmingham, England, where he works as the regional coach for development agency BaseballSoftballUK. He grew up in Speldhurst, Kent, playing for the Tonbridge Bobcats before making the transition to adult baseball with both Tonbridge and then the Brighton Buccaneers. Will then moved to the US where he attended Menlo College (2003-07) in Atherton, CA. Will has since played for the London Mets and also the Gauting Indians, Germany (2009). In addition to playing, Will is also the head coach of the Great Britain Cadets national team (Under-16), assists on the Junior national team (Under-18) and is the head coach of the British Baseball Academy. Will and his partner Andrea are expecting their first child in January 2010.

Tim Collins

Tim Collins is from Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, where he works as a manager at Discount Car and Truck Rental. He played baseball in Austria for the National Champions, Kufstein Vikings, and is currently playing for the St Catharines Metros of the Central Ontario Baseball Association, along with GB team-mate Brian Essery. He joined the GB programme in 2005 after a successful try-out. Tim is married to Sarah.
Chris Falls

Chris Falls is originally from Calgary, in Alberta, Canada. He played baseball for Mississippi Valley State University (NCAA DIV 1) from 2001 to 2005, before moving to Europe. In 2006 he played for Senart Templier of France, in 2007 he moved to Germany to play for Tϋbingen Hawks Baseball Club and in 2008 and 2009 for Mannheim Tornados, along with GB team-mate Craig Pycock. He was recommended to the GB programme by his then GB team-mate Geoff Freeborn, joined the squad for the 2006 tour of Germany and has been part of the team since then. Chris spent eight years as a competitive alpine ski racer.
Jason Holowaty

Jason Holowaty is originally from Columbia, Connecticut, and has lived in Great Britain for several years, recently becoming a British citizen. Growing up in a baseball family, Jason played baseball at Brown University (NCAA Div I) for four years (1991-95), earning Academic All-Ivy League honours in his senior year. He played three seasons in the Western Australian Baseball League for the Melville Braves (1997, 1999, 2000), before playing five seasons in Great Britain, where he was a three-time national champion with the Richmond Flames (2006) and the London Mets (2007, 2008). Jason currently plays in Belgium for the Namur Angels.
Evan Romanchuk

Evan Romanchuk was born and raised in Vancouver, BC. He was a member of the Vancouver Mounties, the 2003 U-18 Canadian Champions. He then attended and played at Santa Rosa Junior College and was a member of the 2005 California Junior College State Champions. Evan then transferred to Arkansas Tech University for one year and hit .333. He transferred to San Francisco State University, where he led the Gators in hitting in 2007 and graduated in 2008 with a BA in psychology. Evan was then invited to attend spring training with the Victoria Seals of the Golden League. He moved on to play for the South Louisiana Pipe Liners and Coastal King Fish of the Continental Baseball League. Evan is currently playing for the Namur Angels in Belgium. He is British by way of his mother Jill, his biggest fan. His father is Bill and he is brother of Victoria.
Brant Ust

Brant Ust grew up in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, England, before moving to Seattle, Washington, USA in 1988. In 1996 he was an 11th-round draft choice of the New York Yankees, but chose not to sign and attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 2000. In the 1999 MLB draft he was selected in the 6th round by the Detroit Tigers, which was the start of a nine year professional career spanning four MLB organisations (Detroit, Boston, Pittsburgh and Seattle) and a stint in the Italian Professional League (BBC-Grosseto). He was part of Team USA for the World Championships in 1998 and the IBAF World Cup in 2005. Brant joined the GB programme as part of the silver medal-winning GB team at the 2007 European Championships. He participated in the 2008 Belgium 4-Nations Cup, as well as the exhibition game versus cricketers in Taunton last autumn. Brant is married to the former Jessica Hoppe, and they have an infant son, Gavin. They live in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA.
Sam Wiley

Sam Wiley was born in London and moved to Los Angeles when he was three. He grew up in North Hollywood, where he was taught to play baseball by his father. He was an All-City and All-CIF player at Loyola High School of Los Angeles. He went to Tulane University, New Orleans, where he played for two years before transferring to University of San Francisco for a year. From there he transferred to Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA, an NAIA school, where he has played for the past year. He was the All-Conference catcher at Westmont and led both his team and the league in hitting. After the World Cup, he will start graduate school and play his last year of eligibility at Cal State LA. Sam was contacted by Coach Rapaglia while playing at Tulane and invited to a GB workout in New York in summer 2007. He has not been able to compete with the GB team until now, due to school conflicts. His hobbies include surfing, ping pong, reading and video games. He is the eldest of five kids.

Raef Hobbs-Brown

Raef Hobbs-Brown was born and raised in Western Australia. He has played baseball since he was 11 years old and represented Western Australia many times in State v State competitions. He became involved with the GB programme when as a 19-year-old playing for Brighton Buccaneers in the UK he was selected to represent GB in the 2005 European Championships. In 2006, while playing in Germany, he joined the GB touring side, playing in various locations in that country. Raef is a utility player who in 2008 clocked up stats at all positions bar catcher. He has spent the past five years travelling to Great Britain, France and Germany to play baseball. When back in Australia, he travels to South Australia to play, and spends six weeks each year at home in Western Australia. He is currently playing baseball in Germany.

Richard Klijn

Richard Klijn is from South Cumbria in the Lake District in England. He started playing baseball for Cartmel Valley Baseball Club at the age of seven and later represented Manchester Eagles at senior level. He has been actively involved with the GB programme since the age of 10, when he represented GB at the World Children’s Baseball Federation in Canada. Richard moved to Germany in 2007 to play for Regensburg Legioneare. His other interests include football, in which he represented England in the under 17s. As the youngest member of the GB squad he is looking forward to demonstrating that he represents the future of GB baseball.
Matt McGraw

Matt McGraw was raised in Burlington, Ontario. He began playing baseball at the age of four, and credits the early development of his career to his neighbours, Ace and Biz, and parents, Karin and Michael. After playing with the Burlington Bulls organisation throughout secondary school, he attended and played for the University of Maine. There he helped the Black Bears capture two America East championships. Matt was fortunate enough to spend his junior summer playing in the Alaskan Baseball League. For the 2009 season, Matt played with Door Neptunus in the Dutch Major League.
Alex Malihoudis

Alex Malihoudis is from Tonbridge, England, and grew up playing baseball in England before moving to the US for his junior year of high school. He returned to the UK on graduating from university. His teams include: Tonbridge Bobcats (1988-95); Brighton Buccaneers(1995-2006); Archbishop Mitty High School, San Jose, California (1995-97); Menlo College, Atherton, CA (1997-2001); Tubingen Hawks, Germany (2007); London Mets (2007-08); Senart Templiers, Paris, France (2009). Alex is the longest-serving current GB player. He has represented GB since 1993, first with the Cadets, then the Juniors and 2009 marks Alex’s 15th season with the senior national team. He enjoys reading, travelling and listening to music (specifically electronic, progressive and techno).
Bradley Marcelino

Brad Marcelino was born in Essex, England, and went to school in Enfield, Middlesex, until he was 11 years old. He played high school and college ball in California and then professionally after college. His father, Oscar Marcelino, played for the Enfield Spartans during his time in England and was also a member of the GB squad. Brad started playing with the GB programme in Italy in 1999. Great Britain’s silver medal finish in Barcelona in 2007 was his fifth European Championships. At age eight he appeared on Channel 4 television with Ernie Banks, Bobby Bonds and other major league baseball alumni when they visited The Oval. During the off-season Brad coaches at La Costa Canyon High School and also has his own baseball equipment company, Lace Baseball USA, based in San Diego.
Tom Stack-Babich

Tom Stack-Babich was born in London, England, and moved to the USA in late 1990. He played high school baseball for Xaverian Brothers, leading the team to a state championship and national ranking in 2004. Tom went on to Wake Forest University before transferring to Harvard University, where he was a four-year starter earning several All-Ivy league recognitions, including a senior year which saw him hit .303 with 10 doubles, 8 homers, 33 rbi and produce a 1-0 record with 2 saves on the mound. He signed with the Southern Illinois Miners of the Frontier League out of college, hitting 3 homers in 42 at bats. Tom enjoys playing guitar, reading and weight lifting in his spare time.
Ryan Trask

Ryan Trask is originally from Johannesburg, South Africa. He grew up playing baseball there before moving to England in 1999. In 2000 he was invited to join the GB junior baseball programme and played in the 2000 and 2001 Colt World Series, Lafayette, Indiana, and in the 2002 European Junior Qualifiers. He has also been actively involved with the senior team since 2002. He currently plays for the 2009 British Champions, Bracknell Blazers, and has been assisting as a coach at the British Baseball Academy since 2007. Ryan enjoys relaxing with his brothers and friends and anything to do with sports.
Staff
Stephan Rapaglia

Stephan Rapaglia was born in Tübingen, Germany, and grew up in Rye, New York. He was appointed to the position of Great Britain national team head coach in March 2004 and brought years of successful collegiate, international and professional coaching experience to the GB programme. This includes time as head coach with the Johnstown Johnnies, an independent minor league franchise in the US; head coach with the Tübingen Hawks in the German Bundesliga; and an assistant coaching position with Iona College, a university team playing at the top level of US collegiate athletics. Prior to coaching, Stephan enjoyed a successful career as a player in the US and Europe, which included a stint in the Houston Astros organisation and a championship season with Neptunus in Holland. In 2007, at his second European Championship, Stephan led Great Britain to a silver medal finish and automatic qualification for the 2009 Baseball World Cup. Stephan combines his love of baseball with a career as a lawyer for a real estate company in Greenwich, CT. He now lives in Ridgefield, CT, with wife Megan, daughter Hannah, aged 10, and twin daughters Katie and Sarah, aged 5.
Brian Cleary

Brian Cleary grew up in Boca Raton, Florida, US, and now lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has been head coach for the Cincinnati Bearcats at the University of Cincinnati UC for 13 years, and he has the second-best coaching record in UC history. In 2007 he was invited to join the programme by GB head coach Stephan Rapaglia and served as pitching coach with the programme during its participation in the 2007 European Championships in Barcelona. He and his wife Valerie have three children, Kevin (12), Michael (10) and a daughter named Kaelin, who is 7.
Charlie Sullivan

Charlie Sullivan was born in Connecticut, US, and currently lives in Florida. He played three years of minor league baseball with the Texas Rangers and New York Mets, and represented France in the 1994 European Championship in Italy. Charlie coached GB Head Coach Stephan Rapaglia for Albany-Colonie of the Northeast League in 1995 and 1996, and has been a scout for the past 10 years, six with the Pittsburgh Pirates and four with the Milwaukee Brewers. He is married to Ena, and they have two daughters, Claritza (8) and Nathalie (2).
Alan Dean

Alan Dean is from Horsham, England, where he works full time with elite junior golfers as a sports science lecturer/strength & conditioning coach/physio at The Golf College, Sussex, and Evergreens Clinic, Horsham. He has been working with the GB baseball squads and GB fastpitch softball squads since 2006. Alan was trainer/strength & conditioning coach to the 2007 EC silver medal GB baseball team and the 2009 EC silver medal GB FP women’s softball team, both teams qualifying for respective World Championships. He is married to Hazel, and they have two sons, Jacob (12), who plays baseball for Horsham and the GB juveniles, and football for Brighton and Hove Albion U-13s, and Louis (3) who is a promising thrower. Alan continues to train and occasionally, competes in road races and plays social golf when time allows.
Alan Smith

Alan Smith was born in Barking, London, and has lived in and around London all his life. For 25 years, while simultaneously pursuing a successful career in the publishing business, Alan played at the highest level of British domestic baseball, winning a number of regional and national championship titles with his team the London Warriors. He also represented GB as a pitcher in the 1991 European Championships in Rome. Following retirement from publishing in 1999, he devoted more time to domestic baseball, in particular at the baseball complex in Finsbury Park, where he coached the youth players and helped develop the adult and youth diamonds. He took on the role of GB General Manager in the spring of 2004 and has been instrumental in laying the administrative and financial foundations that underpin the programme today. Alan lives in Islington with Jill, his long-suffering partner of 23 years, and together they enjoy world travel, music, theatre, and good food and wine.
