GB Baseball star voted co-captain at University of Michigan

Chris Berset

University of Michigan head baseball coach Rich Maloney has announced that seniors Chris Berset and Mike Dufek have been selected as co-captains by their teammates for the 2010 season.

Chris Berset also plays for the GB Baseball Team, and was a standout performer at the IBAF World Cup last September.

GB Team Manager Alan Smith said: “Chris was one of our best players at the World Cup and a great asset to the GB team, not just for his performance on the field but also for his approach to the whole trip. His attitude and behaviour were exemplary, never complaining, and he was always willing to go with the flow. He was a credit to himself, his parents, the GB programme and to his college coach.”

Coach Maloney said: “The team chose these two fine seniors and I believe they are great selections. Both of them are well-deserving and will lead this team well. They both are hard workers who do things the right way and have great character. They exemplify what we want from our student-athletes and have been good role models throughout their careers.”

Career Highs

Playing for Michigan last season, Chris Berset posted a career high in doubles (7) and runs batted in (21) despite missing 24 games due to injury. The switch-hitting catcher had a breakout sophomore year in 2008, appearing in 42 games with 37 starts behind the plate. Michigan was 27-10 in games Berset caught as he helped lead the team to its third straight Big Ten title and NCAA Regional.

“What I look for in a captain are players who are committed to the team,” Rich Maloney added. “Captains should look at things bigger than themselves, and I think Chris and Mike have demonstrated that quality throughout their careers. It’s not about them; they want to win for Michigan.”

The new co-captains will lead the Wolverines in a quest for their fourth Big Ten championship in the last five seasons when they open the 2010 campaign at the Texas Tech Tournament on February 19-21 in Lubbock, Texas.
